An Oracle Database consists of physical files such as data files, control files, and redo log files. An Oracle Instance consists of memory structures and background processes that access and manage those database files.
Oracle background processes perform database management tasks automatically. Some important processes are:

- CKPT (Checkpoint)
- SMON (System Monitor)
- PMON (Process Monitor)
- ARCn (Archiver)
In ARCHIVELOG mode, redo log files are archived, allowing complete database recovery after a failure. In NOARCHIVELOG mode, redo logs are not archived, so recovery is limited to the most recent backup.
